A publishing system
One story could live three lives.
The Universal Press worked across a connected publishing system. A story might first build an audience through serial publication, return as a standalone book, then reach another public through film, radio or music. The company later described the method as 一雞三吃: one creative property developed through three forms.
Standalone books
Popular serials could be edited and issued as books. Readers could keep the story, pass it on and return to it beyond the original publication run.
Across media
Selected stories moved into film, radio and music. Adaptation did more than repeat a plot: it gave a familiar work new performers, images and audiences.
Not every title followed every route. The method describes a publishing strategy, not a claim about the present rights position of every historical work.
30cents novels
30cents novels put Hong Kong stories within reach.
In the 1950s and 60s, readers found compact novels beside newspapers and magazines at street stalls across Hong Kong. The low price opened stories of romance, crime, family conflict and life in a city changing by the month.
Students, workers and families could afford the price. Short formats and frequent publication suited commutes, factory shifts and evenings at home. Readers made fiction part of the city's daily movement.
The Universal Press helped shape this culture, while also publishing magazines and longer book editions. Popular narratives could begin as serials, find a second readership in book form, and sometimes travel onwards to cinema or radio.

《環球小說叢》
One serial publication in a much wider publishing world.
《環球小說叢》 was one of several serial publications issued by The Universal Press. Alongside titles such as 《西點》, 《藍皮書》 and 《武俠世界》, it brought fiction into the same street-level circulation as newspapers and magazines.
Its hand-painted scenes, emphatic lettering and recurring seal made each issue recognisable at a glance. Seen together, the covers offer a vivid view of the emotions, fashions and visual language circulating through post-war Hong Kong, while representing only one part of the press's output.

Rights ownership

The Universal Press owns rights to more than 800 works from this publishing era. This selected showcase from 《環球小說叢》 offers one view into a much wider body of popular taste, urban imagination and the stories Hong Kong readers chose to carry home.

Across periodicals and books

《環球小說叢》 belonged to a larger group of serial publications rather than standing above them. 《西點》, 《藍皮書》 and 《武俠世界》 each met a different reading appetite, alongside standalone romance novels and other book editions.
Works by popular romance writers such as 依達 and 岑凱倫 became part of youth culture through the 1960s, 70s and 80s. 《武俠世界》, founded in 1959, became another important meeting place for Hong Kong's martial arts writing.
Historical publishing associations are distinct from present rights ownership. Rights are confirmed title by title before any project begins.
